The Dumbest Governance Proposal Just Beat Months of Careful DAO Engineering

It was the kind of moment that makes a developer question everything. A DAO I had been advising for six months had spent nearly $200,000 on a custom governance framework. Quadratic voting, conviction pools, futarchy markets, bonded curves for reputation—the works. A masterpiece of on-chain engineering. Then, during a stress test, a junior contributor submitted a proposal that read: "Let's just ask everyone if they agree, and if more than 50% say yes, we do it. Also, we'll trust each other." The room laughed. Then the community voted on it as a joke. The 'dumb' proposal passed with 94% approval. And over the next three months, that simple mechanism—a weekly poll with no token weighting, no bonding, no game theory—produced better outcomes than the complex system ever had. Code is law, but ethics is conscience. And sometimes the conscience of a community is a lot smarter than a thousand lines of Solidity. This is not a story about AI. It is a story about how we have been overcomplicating blockchain governance for the same reason we overcomplicate prompt engineering: we don't trust the intelligence of the system we are building. We think that if we just add more constraints, more checks, more layers of abstraction, we will finally control the chaos. But the chaos is the point. Decentralization is not a machine to be tuned; it is a garden to be tended. And the dumbest-looking proposal might just be the one that understands that best. Context: The Philosophy of Over-Engineering When I left traditional finance in 2016, I believed that smart contracts would eliminate human judgment. Write the rules, deploy them, walk away. That was the dream. But by 2018, after watching a dozen DAOs collapse under the weight of their own complexity, I realized something painful: every additional line of code is a line of trust removed from the community and placed into the hands of the developer who wrote it. Code is law, but who writes the code? And who writes the code for the code that checks the code? This is the central paradox of blockchain governance. We build complex systems to decentralize power, but the very act of building those systems concentrates power into the hands of the engineers who understand them. I saw this firsthand during MakerDAO's early days. We had a beautiful, intricate system of collateralization ratios, oracle feed aggregators, and governance polls. It was pure elegance. But when the March 2020 crash hit, the system nearly broke because no one had fully modeled the human panic that would follow a 50% drop—the very panic we were supposedly protecting against. We had to intervene with a series of emergency executive votes that looked a lot like a central bank. Not because the code was bad, but because the code was too good at being rigid. Core: The Technical Case for Simplicity Let's get technical for a moment. The complex DAO framework I mentioned was based on a model called "Conviction Voting with Decaying Quorums." It had 12 parameters: conviction decay rate, minimum deposit, maximum proposal duration, vote-extending period, and so on. Each parameter required careful calibration based on historical data—data that didn't exist because the DAO was new. So the engineers made assumptions. They assumed a 2% minimum quorum would prevent capture. They assumed a 14-day conviction period would prevent hasty decisions. They assumed that quadratic weighting would favor deeply held preferences over shallow ones. Every assumption was rational. Every assumption was wrong. Why? Because the model treated the community as a set of rational agents optimizing for self-interest. But communities are not rational. They are emotional, cultural, and often contradictory. The simple weekly poll worked because it had no assumptions. It just asked: "Hey, does this feel right?" and let people talk. And when people talk—when they have the space to argue, laugh, and change their minds—they make better collective decisions than any algorithm can predict. This is not anti-technology. This is pro-ecology. I learned this during my SoulBound project in DeFi Summer 2020. We used the SAFE protocol's undercollateralized lending for women in emerging markets. The protocol had a complex risk model with credit scores, reputation oracles, and liquidation thresholds. But it kept failing for users who had no formal credit history. So we simplified: we created local lending circles where women vouched for each other. The code just recorded the vouches. The trust was in the circle. We onboarded 1,500 users in three months with zero defaults. The complex model had a 12% default rate on paper. Culture on-chain, heart on-screen. Now, some readers will argue I am making a category error. "Complex governance is for large treasuries," they say. "Simple polls are fine for small communities." But the evidence says otherwise. Look at Uniswap's governance—one of the largest DAOs by treasury value. Their most effective governance mechanism is a temperature check on the Uniswap forum, which is literally a poll with no on-chain enforcement. It works because it lets people discuss before committing. The complex on-chain vote happens later, but by then the community has already decided through simple human conversation. The code is just a notary. Contrarian: The Pragmatism Test Here is the counter-intuitive truth: the complex system wasn't just ineffective—it was actively harmful. It created a false sense of precision that discouraged debate. When a proposal failed the quadratic vote by 0.3%, people accepted it as mathematically final, even though everyone in the chat knew the community was split 50-50 on the issue. The algorithm created a tyranny of measurement over meaning. The simple poll, by contrast, produced a clear majority and a clear mandate. But it also produced a clear dissenting minority, which led to a productive discussion about compromise. The algorithm never would have allowed that conversation to happen. I am not saying all complexity is bad. Complex risk models saved lives during the 2022 bear market when I counseled 500+ distressed investors through my "Stoicism in the Bear Market" series. But governance complexity is different. Governance is about collective decision-making, not individual optimization. And collective decision-making is a fundamentally human process that resists algorithmic capture. Every time we try to perfect it with code, we import the biases of the developer who wrote that code. I believe that the future of DAO governance is not more sophisticated mechanisms—it is more sophisticated culture. It leads to delegation, which leads to centralization, which leads to oligarchy. We have seen this play out in every major DAO. The "move fast and break things" ethos of DeFi Summer gave way to "move slow and entrench insiders" by DeFi Winter. The simple poll system, precisely because it was dumb, forced everyone to stay engaged. There was no delegation, no proxy voting, no sophisticated avoidance. You had to show up and talk to your neighbors. That is the blockchain vision we lost. Takeaway: The Vision Forward So what does this mean for the next wave of blockchain builders? It means we need to stop treating governance as a software engineering problem and start treating it as a community design problem. The tools matter, but the culture matters more. The dumbest-looking proposal might just be the one that saves your DAO from itself. Not because it is technically superior, but because it acknowledges the fundamental truth at the heart of decentralization: that trust is not a resource to be optimized but a relationship to be cultivated. Solidarity over speculation. That is not just a mantra—it is a design principle. When you are building your next governance system, ask yourself: does this code make my community more connected or more dependent? Does it empower the loudest voices or the most thoughtful ones? Does it create space for disagreement or just enforce consensus? If the answer is the latter, you are building a cage, not a community. The projects that will survive this consolidation are not the ones with the fanciest contracts—they are the ones with the strongest communities. And strong communities are built on simple things: regular communication, shared values, and the trust that everyone is acting in good faith. The code can record that trust. It cannot create it. So go ahead and write a governance proposal that says "Let's just trust each other." You might be surprised how perfect it turns out.
